Sydney Coastal Trail
The objective is to enrich the experience of the popular coastal walks in Maroubra and Coogee, Sydney, by enabling visitors to learn and explore independently. This initiative mirrors the educational goals of Sydney City, focusing on revealing the historical significance of various points along these scenic routes. The aim is to engage walkers with Sydney's forgotten past, highlighting landmarks and narratives that have shaped the city's coastal heritage. By facilitating self-guided exploration, the project seeks to deepen the connection between the community and its local history, transforming a casual walk into an enlightening journey through time.
Concept Development: The project commenced with an exploration of the Sydney Coastal Trail's history, pinpointing locations of historical and cultural significance. Collaborating with local historians, we selected narratives that brought to light the lesser-known stories at historical sites in Maroubra and Coogee.
Technical Design: We then outlined the AR journey, focusing on creating an interactive experience that was both informative and engaging. Our technology team worked on developing an AR platform that was intuitive and seamless, ensuring historical narratives were easily accessible.
Content Creation: Storytelling was at the core of this project. We scripted captivating narratives, created detailed 3D models of key historical figures, and produced rich soundscapes to complement the visual content. Each story was designed to give visitors a deeper understanding of the coastal trail's past.
User Experience Design: The AR experience was designed with the user in mind, ensuring accessibility through a simple smartphone interface. We aimed for a hassle-free experience, with minimal downloads and intuitive navigation, making history accessible at the touch of a button.
Launch and Feedback Loop: After launching the AR experience, we implemented a system for collecting user feedback. This allowed us to continuously refine the experience, ensuring it remained an enriching part of the Sydney Coastal Trail.
The process involves an extensive exploration of historical archives and records to select locations along the coastal walks where stories can be vividly brought to life. The experience is designed to be immersive, with each chosen site telling a unique story, such as the journey of the last tram in the 1960s, the bustling days of Coogee Pier in the early 1900s, the enchantment of Tamarama Wonderland's elephant, and the significance of Aboriginal art sites. Through this carefully curated exploration, walkers will have the opportunity to engage with interactive narratives and historical insights, enriching their understanding of Sydney's coastal heritage. This self-guided journey not only promotes physical well-being through walking but also nurtures a sense of wonder and curiosity about the local environment and its history.
