Battle of Knockavoe
The aim was to revolutionise the visitor experience at The Alley Theatre in Strabane, Northern Ireland, by transforming the traditional exhibit of the Battle of Knockavoe into an interactive, immersive journey. This transformation sought to commemorate the historic battle of 1522, a significant event in the Tudor conquest of Ireland, involving the powerful O'Neill clan and the English forces. By utilising modern technology, the initiative aimed to bring history to life, allowing visitors to engage with the past in a dynamic and meaningful way.
Concept Development: The project began with a deep dive into Knockavoe's historical landscape, pinpointing narratives that would resonate with visitors. Working in close collaboration with historians and local experts, we selected stories that vividly brought to life Knockavoe's multifaceted history.
Technical Design: Our focus then shifted to detailing the AR journey, emphasizing intuitive user engagement and state-of-the-art technical specifications. Our tech team was tasked with developing an AR platform that could seamlessly integrate history into the present, making it accessible and engaging.
Content Creation: At the heart of our project was the art of storytelling. We engaged in scripting immersive narratives, creating realistic 3D models of key historical figures, and producing rich soundscapes to enhance the storytelling experience, all designed to give visitors a sense of stepping back in time.
User Experience Design: We designed the AR experience with the user in mind, ensuring ease of access through a straightforward smartphone interface. Our goal was to eliminate any barriers to engagement, allowing users to dive into the history of Knockavoe with just a few taps.
Launch and Feedback Loop: Following the launch, we didn't just sit back; we implemented a feedback collection system to continually gather user impressions. This approach allowed us to make iterative improvements, ensuring the Knockavoe Interactive Journey remained an enriching and memorable experience for all visitors.
The transformation involved the development of an 'exhibition portal,' a digital gateway through which visitors could immerse themselves in a 360-degree historical reconstruction of the battle's key moments. By integrating augmented reality (AR) technology with the physical exhibit, visitors could interact with lifelike representations of Con O'Neill and Manus O'Donnell, among other historical figures, blurring the lines between the digital and the real. The inclusion of artwork, replica armour, and costumes added tangible elements to the narrative, while the AR component enriched the storytelling with audio and visual cues. This innovative approach not only enhanced the engagement and understanding of the exhibit's visitors but also set a new standard for how historical events are presented in a museum setting.
